Anyone else keep a notebook for car problems? Mine finally helped me this month (19 อ่าน)

I started writing down every weird thing my Audi A3 does about a year ago, mostly because my memory is terrible and I was tired of telling mechanics “it makes a noise sometimes” and getting a blank stare. It is just an old school notebook in the glove box, with the date, the weather, what I was doing, and what the car did. Things like “cold morning, slight shake when moving off” or “highway, smooth, no issues.” Last week I finally opened it and read through the pages, and a pattern jumped out that I never noticed before. The jerky feeling only shows up on days under about twenty degrees or after the car sits overnight, never in the afternoon heat. My brother says I am being too serious about it and that cars are just machines that have bad days. My friend Nadia says the notebook is the smartest thing she has heard all year and that workshops love customers who bring real details. So now I am torn between feeling proud and feeling a bit silly. I also wanted to understand what the gearbox might be doing in those cold starts, so I spent an evening reading a few pages, and if you want to visit this website for more details about how these gearboxes behave, it explained some of it in plain words, though I still would not take one page as the final answer. What I really want to ask is how you all describe problems to a workshop. Do you take photos, record a video on your phone, or just talk? Is it useful to record the sound, or do they ignore that? And when a mechanic says “we could not repeat the problem,” what do you do next? That happened to me once and I left feeling like nobody believed me. Also, should I keep every invoice in a folder, or is a phone photo enough? I would love to hear how you track things, and whether your notes ever helped you catch a problem early or saved you from paying for something you did not need.
