Lost Another Run, Started Another: Why PokéRogue Got Its Hooks in Me (6 อ่าน)

16 ก.ย. 2569 10:56

I lost a run in Pokerogue and immediately clicked New Game. That is basically the whole review, but let me explain how I got there.

I had heard people call it a Pokemon roguelite, which sounded like a weird mix until I actually played it. There are no Pokemon Centers and no saves to fall back on. Instead, you go through a chain of battles where one bad decision can end everything. My first run fell apart embarrassingly fast. I picked what looked cool, ignored typing almost entirely, and got punished for it.

The first thing that hit me is that you cannot just grab your favorites

When you pick starters in Pokerogue, each Pokemon has a cost value, and you only have a limited budget to work with. I remember trying to fit in a couple of heavy hitters and realizing there was no room left for anything else. That is when it clicked. This is a Pokemon browser game where team composition actually matters, not just raw power.

After a couple of failed runs, I stopped chasing the flashiest picks. A balanced Pokemon team with a couple of different types did better than three strong Pokemon that all had the same weakness.

Runs are built from small decisions

Each run throws different biomes, wild Pokemon, trainers, and bosses at you, and the items you pick up along the way genuinely shape how things go. Items can stack, so early choices can have a bigger effect later.

I made the mistake of grabbing whatever looked nice instead of thinking about what my team actually lacked. By the time I reached tougher opponents, I had a pile of items that did not help very much.

Tougher trainers and bosses are where runs can go sideways. I have had promising teams fall apart because I entered a fight with no healing items and half my team already weakened.

Catching Pokemon does more than fill the Pokedex

Catching wild Pokemon during a run contributes to your long term progress. They can join your team right away, but they can also unlock and improve starters for future attempts.

I honestly did not expect catching a random Pokemon in one run to matter much later, but it does. Traits such as ability and nature can carry over to that starter, and you can also collect candies as you keep catching and using Pokemon.

That is the part that kept pulling me back. Every failed attempt still added something, so losing did not feel like completely wasted time.

How the Pokerogue Dex became part of my routine

Here is where I have to mention the Pokerogue Dex , because I use it constantly. Not as a guide that I read from beginning to end, but as something I open whenever I am second guessing myself.

Sometimes I will be looking at a Pokemon and wondering why it feels weaker than I expected, so I check its base stats. Other times I am planning a team and want to know a Pokemon starter cost before I commit, or whether its evolution conditions are realistic for a run that might not last very long.

I have also checked available moves, abilities, and where certain Pokemon can appear. That has saved me from a lot of pointless guessing.

The Dex is not magic. It will not play the run for you. But knowing a Pokemon typing before I add it to my team has stopped me from repeating the same mistakes over and over.

A few things I learned the hard way

Do not ignore type coverage. My first few teams were basically one type with extra steps.

Healing items are important. Since there is no Pokemon Center during a run, I now think about recovery before I think about power.

Check before you commit. This is where the Dex helps most. A quick look at stats or a move list can change which Pokemon I decide to bring.

Try the Daily Run. It gives everyone the same setup for the day, which is a fun change when I want a break from my own messy attempts.

Give it a shot

Pokerogue is a fan made project, not an official Nintendo or Game Freak release, and it can be played in a browser. If you grew up with Pokemon and like the idea of a roguelite that makes every decision matter, it can be an interesting experience.

Start a run, learn from the mistakes, and try another one. If you are playing too, comparing strange team choices and unexpected discoveries with other players can make the experience even more fun.
