The B-52 is also certified to carry the B61-12 nuclear gravity bomb, a guided weapon with variable yield. This unusual layout allows the bomber to operate from shorter runways and distribute its massive weight across a larger surface area. The nose gear has two wheels and steers the aircraft during taxi. The B-52 can land on runways as short as 10,000 feet, which is shorter than many commercial airliners require. The future of the B-52 is secure. The Air Force has allocated over $11 billion for the re-engining program and associated upgrades through 2035. The new engines will reduce carbon emissions by 25 percent and cut noise levels significantly, making the bomber more environmentally acceptable for operations from bases in the United States and overseas. The B-52 will also receive a new radar system, the APG-79 AESA radar, which is currently used on the F/A-18 Super Hornet. This radar will give the bomber advanced air-to-ground mapping and targeting capabilities. The B-52 will continue to fly alongside the B-2 Spirit and the upcoming B-21 Raider, providing a bridge between legacy systems and next-generation stealth technology.
